Turkey is supposed to receive Russian S-400 air defense missiles in the middle of this month, which causes a lot of criticism from the US.
In May Pentagon claimed that in case Turkey accepts the delivery of S-400 it will be expelled from the fifth-generation F-35 Joint Strike Fighter program. Turkey has time till July 31st.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has claimed that the deal with Russia on S-400 delivery is done and won’t be changed. He also believes that the US President Donald Trump will not impose sanctions against Turkey over the deal. The two Presidents met on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Japan last week and discussed the issue, yet the prospect of sanctions was left up in the air.
”In the longer term, there is still the possibility that Turkey and the United States could reach an arrangement whereby the S-400s are placed away in storage or given to another nation in exchange for the lifting of sanctions, but this possibility is still pretty remote right now,” said a senior military analyst Omar Lamrani.
Erdoğan said he would seek compensation if Turkey is expelled from the F-35 program.
