US, Turkey discuss shipments of S-400

Mevlut Cavusoglu, Foreign Minister of Turkey, and Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, have talked over the phone about Turkey’s purchase of the Russian S-400 missile defense system, reported Russian news agency TASS Saturday.

This was the first contact of the two sides since the first shipment of the S-400 air defense system. According to a Turkish official who spoke on condition of anonymity, Cavusoglu and Pompeo also discussed US President Donald Trump’s decision to exclude Turkey form the F-35 fighter jet program.

“The sides have discussed the situation around [the deliveries of Russian missile defense systems] S-400 and [US fighter jets] F-35, as well as the situation in Syria’s Manbij and Idlib and the creation of a safety zone in Syria.”

Turkey started receiving the S-400s last Friday. Previously the US warned the country that in case it proceeds with the S-400 deal it would be thrown out of the F-35 program, as the two systems are incompatible. It has also been stated that the deal would damage US-Turkish relations and may result in new US sanctions against Turkey.

Turkey is the first NATO member to buy Russian-made military equipment of this class.
