The US Federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) will resume the practice of the death warrant after a 16-year gap. According to Ministry of Justice, the execution five prisoners convicted of murder is planned for coming months.
According to Ministry of Justice, the US BOP approved the use of a chemical drug for execution, which is currently used in several states. This lethal injection will be given to five prisoners. Three executions are scheduled for December 2019, and two for January 2020. The Ministry of Justice said that the following executions will be scheduled for a later date.
The last federal execution in the U.S. was in 2003, when Gulf War veteran Louis Jones Jr. was sentenced to death warrant for kidnapping and killing a 19-year-old soldier. According to Penal Reform International, 65 prisoners are currently on federal death row. Capital punishment laws apply to more than half of the US states.
“The Congress has directly sanctioned the death penalty through legislation passed by People’s Representatives of both Houses of Congress and approved by the President,” said Attorney General William Barr. “Under the administrations of Both Parties, the Ministry of Justice sought the death warrant against the worst offenders, including these five murderers, each of whom was convicted by a jury after a full and fair trial.”
Prisoners will be executed with the help of pentobarbital, a lethal drug that replaces the components of three solutions previously used for death warrant under decision by the federal authorities.
The USA is the only Western country where death sentences are still carried out. Twenty-nine states have capital punishment laws.
