According to the latest U. N. Assistance Mission report, Afghan and US forces together killed more civilians in Afghanistan in the first quarter or 2019 than the Taliban and the Islamic state did.
The US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation Zalmay Khalilzad, appointed by Trump to hold Afghan peace talks, stated that the need for a peace agreement with the Taliban is urgent and the number of civilian deaths only underscores it. «We deeply regret any loss of innocent life,» tweeted Khalilzad.
The U.N. report states that US forces caused 305 civilian deaths and 303 injuries, the Taliban and the Islamic state — 227 deaths and 736 injuries. Half of the civilian casualties, a figure that includes injuries and deaths, is made up of women and children.
The U.N. Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto said Wednesday that both sides should take “urgent steps” to prevent harm to civilians. “Pro-government Forces are called upon to take immediate measures to mitigate the rising death toll and suffering caused by airstrikes and search operations,” Said Yamamoto.
