Britain’s Minister of Trade Liam Fox said Monday that he would apologize for comments of the UK ambassador calling the US President Donald Trump and his administration “inept” and “dysfunctional,” reported Reuters.
Mr. Fox is to meet President Trump’s daughter Ivanka Trump during his trip to Washington. “I will be apologizing for the fact that either our civil service or elements of our political class have not lived up to the expectations that either we have or the United States has about their behavior, which in this particular case has lapsed in a most extraordinary and unacceptable way,” he said.
“Malicious leaks of this nature are unprofessional, unethical and unpatriotic and can actually lead to a damage to that relationship which can therefore affect our wider security interest.”
British Ambassador in Washington Kim Darroch, whose confidential diplomatic memos leaked to the public, said: “We don’t really believe this Administration is going to become substantially more normal; less dysfunctional; less unpredictable; less faction riven; less diplomatically clumsy and inept.”
Britain’s former Minister of Defense Michael Fallon commented on the matter and said that this would be the end of Darroch’s term as an ambassador. “It’s obviously damaging to any relationship when this sort of stuff gets published,” he said.
