UK officials investigating whether Russians are responsible for leaked memos

UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt confirmed that British officials are now investigating whether it was Russian government who hacked confidential diplomatic memos of UK Envoy in Washington, reported Business Insider Tuesday.

Britain’s man in the US Kim Darroch called the US President Donald Trump “incompetent” and his Administration “inept” and “dysfunctional.” Darroch’s memos from 2017 and up to the present have leaked to the public and caused negative reaction of many UK and US officials, including Trump, who said he would not deal with Darroch any longer.

UK officials have launched a probe into who leaked the so-called “diplomatic telegrams,” which first focused on top British politicians, but then switched the focus to foreign “hostile” governments.

“Of course it would be massively concerning if it was the act of a foreign, hostile state. I’ve seen no evidence that that’s the case, but we’ll look at the leak inquiry very carefully,” said Hunt.

“They are going to follow all avenues of inquiry to try to understand how this happened. That’s something that will be considered.”

Michael Fallon, former defense secretary, stated that the leaks of such information “is clearly a breach of the Official Secrets Act,” and noted that if the person responsible for the leaks is found, “prosecutions should follow.”

Isabel Oakeshott, British journalist who was the first to publish the leaks, said she received them not from Russians.
