Trump administration plans to speed up death penalty for mass shooters

US Attorney General William Barr claimed Monday the White House will push for a bill to speed up the death penalty for mass shooters, reported AXIOS Tuesday.

Speaking at the Fraternal Order of Police conference in New Orleans, the AG said that under the new legislation those accused of mass shootings and killing of law enforcement officers would be punished by death.

«I will share with you one proposal that we will be advancing after Labor Day.  We will be proposing legislation providing that in cases of mass murder, or in cases of murder of a law enforcement officer, there will be a timetable for judicial proceedings that will allow imposition of any death sentence without undue delay.  Punishment must be swift and certain,” Barr said.

US President Donald Trump announced a week ago that he would be proposing “legislation ensuring that those who commit hate crimes and mass murders face the death penalty, and that this capital punishment be delivered quickly, decisively, and without years of needless delay.»

The announcements come after Barr’s order to the Bureau of Prisons to resume federal executions.
