The former CIA officer turned out to be a Chinese spy

In 2007, a naturalized American citizen, Jerry Lee, who was 54 years old at the time, left the CIA and moved to Hong Kong. There, in 2010, he was recruited by Chinese intelligence officers. Subsequently, from May 2010 to December 2013, hundreds of thousands of dollars were received on his account. He was paid for information about American secret agents, promising lifelong financial support. In the CIA, Lee worked from 1994 to 2007. A statement by the Ministry of Justice states that he fully admitted his guilt in transmitting information on national defense to a foreign state.

Thanks to Lee from 2010 to 2012, China has managed to uncover a whole network of such agents. Approximately 20 of them were executed or sent to prison, so for American intelligence this was the biggest failure in recent years.

Assistant Attorney General for Offenses against State Security John Demers stated that this is the third case in less than a year in which American intelligence officers and China appear. “This is a tragic betrayal of the country and colleagues,” he noted.

Lee started a special diary and address book with secret information. There were recorded the real names of agents, places of operational meetings, phone numbers and information about secret objects, as well as specific places to which American intelligence officers were sent. During the search of his number in Hawaii, a USB drive was also discovered. Investigators managed to recover the information erased from it.

CIA officials questioned Lee in 2012. Then he said that he had met with Chinese intelligence officers, but he didn’t say that he was fulfilling their tasks, the American Justice Ministry said. In 2013, he first said that he knew nothing about the document from his USB-drive, but then he confessed that he had created it. However, he insisted that he did not pass it on to Chinese intelligence services.

Lee was arrested at the airport in New York in January 2018. He will be sentenced in August.
