Russia observes New START Treaty, US Dept says

US State Department said that Russia still observes the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START), Sputnik reported.

«Based on the information available as of 31 December 2019, the United States certifies the Russian Federation to be in compliance with the terms of New START,» the reported said.

Yet, Moscow no longer follows the Intermediate Nuclear Treaty (IMF) as Washington found that Russian went on breaching its obligations in 2019 in accords with Articles I, IV, and VI of the INF Treaty “not to possess, produce, or flight-test a ground-launched cruise missile (GLCM) with a range capability of 500 kilometers (km) to 5,500 kilometers, or to possess or produce launchers of such missiles,» the report said.

The allegations are concluded in the report provided to the US Congress, called “Compliance with Arms Control, Nonproliferation and Disarmament Agreements and Commitments». Russia, meanwhile, rejects them.

Thus, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov urged to negotiate on the possible prolonging of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (New START) since Russia is not an initiator to break it.
