Pompeo says US doesn’t ask Asian nations to take sides

Mike Pompeo, US Secretary of State, attended a meeting with leaders of Southeast Asian countries in Bangkok Thursday, reported Reuters.

According to the report, Pompeo claimed that the US never asked Indo-Pacific nations to choose between countries and take sides.

Pompeo’s statement came amid rising tensions between the US and China.

At the beginning of the meeting with his counterparts Pompeo stated: “Look, we don’t ever ask any Indo-Pacific nations to choose between countries.”

“For decades, American diplomacy with ASEAN has been consistently guided by our desire for partnership, our respect for the sovereignty of each of our nations and our shared commitment to the fundamental rules of laws, human rights, and sustainable economic growth.”
