Oliver Stone asked Vladimir Putin to be his daughter’s godfather

Oliver Stone, an American film director, screenwriter and producer, asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to become a godfather for his 22-year-old daughter.

According to a transcript of the interview released Friday, Stone asked Putin about his ties to Viktor Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian politician and former President Kuchma’s Chief of Staff. Putin then explained that Medvedchuk once asked him “to take part in the christening of his daughter,” and noted that “according to Russian Orthodox tradition, you can’t refuse such a request.”

Stone, who reportedly admires President Putin, asked him to be the godfather for his daughter. “Does she want to become an Orthodox Christian?” questioned Putin and added that Stone had to ask her first. The two went on discussing “American culture” and propaganda of homosexuality in Russia.

The interview, which took place in June, came while Mr. Stone was putting together his new documentary “Revealing Ukraine,” which aired on Russian TV Friday. Stone also asked Putin about Russian-Ukrainian relationship and whether the two countries would ever “come together again.” President Putin stated that although the bilateral relations between Russia and Ukraine were “not easy at the moment,” it is “inevitable” that they will get over it.

“At any rate, the cultivation of normal, friendly and, even more than friendly, allied relations is inevitable,” Putin said.
