The US imposed new round of sanctions against Russia for its alleged involvement in poisoning of Segei Skripal and his daughter in 2018 in Britain, reported the New York Times.
US President Donald Trump signed an executive order Thursday, making it the second round of sanctions over Skripals’ poisoning.
Skripal and his daughter Yulia were poisoned in March of 2018, which put them into a coma. Although Moscow claimed it was not involved, the US accused Russia of the attack.
The signing of the order by President Trump came one day after his phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The two leaders discussed the wildfires in Siberia, yet did not mention sanctions.
Both Democratic and Republican lawmakers have been criticising President Trump and the White House for taking long to impose new restrictions, following up on the previous round gone into effect in August 2018. House Foreign Affairs Committee leaders Eliot Engel and Michael McCaul issued a letter saying that The Chemical and Biological Weapons and Warfare Elimination Act «mandated the second round of sanctions to be imposed within three months, yet well over a year has passed since the attack.»
«Therefore, we urge you to ta immediate action to hold Russia fully accountable for its blatant use of a chemical weapon in Europe.»
At the G20 Summit in June 2019, President Putin met with former British Prime Minister Theresa May, who told him to hand over Russian agents who conducted the attack on Skripal, former British agent. President Putin then stated that British claims that Russia is responsible for the poisoning are «not worth five pounds.»
«All this fuss about spies and counterspies, it is not worth serious interstate relations,» Putin said. «This spy story, as we say, it is not worth five kopeyeck. Or even five pounds, for that matter.»
Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s Press Secretary, said after meeting of the two leaders that President Putin «explained everything that needed to be explained» about the Skripals’ case.
Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya commented on the new round of sanctions imposed by the US. «Perhaps, Vladimir Putin explained it «thoroughly enough» that Theresa’s May role in the Skripals’ case was falling to pieces,» Veselnitskaya said.
«Right after that, one of the most odious and not even knowing where Russia is congressmen Eliot Engel, and, as customary in American politics, another top Republican in the House Michael McCaul, exposed who really is behind all this soap opera about Skripals. As a result, once again American President bent under their nonsense claims, or pretended to be bent. May is gone, yet the case is on.»
