Iran detains UK Envoy over ‘directing radical actions’

News

Robert Macaire, British Envoy in Iran, got arrested in Iran amid protests, Foreign Office of the United Kingdom stated.

British officials said they viewed the arrest as “flagrant violation of international law.”

According to official statement, the Ambassador was detained for over an hour over allegedly “organizing and directing radical actions.”

Dominic Raab, Foreign Secretary of the UK, stated that the detention of the Envoy “without grounds or explanations” runs counter international norms.

“The Iranian government is at a cross-roads moment. It can continue its march towards pariah status with all the political and economic isolation that entails, or take steps to de-escalate tensions and engage in a diplomatic path forwards,” he said.

Macaire is reportedly scheduled to be “summoned by the foreign ministry tomorrow morning.”
