Democrats suggest to fine $25,000 a day until officials agree to comply

The Chairman of the US House of Representatives Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff in his interview with Axios suggested to fine White House officials who refuse to cooperate with House Democrats.

“We would levy fines on those who are not cooperating,” said Schiff. “You could fine someone $25,000 a day until they comply. You can do that. We’re looking through the history and studying the law to make sure we’re on solid ground,” he added.

In at least six separate cases Trump administration representatives refuse to comply. According to Schiff, imposing fines “may be even quicker than the impeachment proceeding or the court proceeding.”

Congress has a power to arrest, detain and fine, but it hasn’t been used since the 1930s. And if Democrats are not planning to arrest or detain, they actually can impose fines, but that would require certain legislation procedures and no one knows what impact it may have.

“It used to be we imprisoned people,” Schiff said. “But we could also fine them $25,000 a day until they comply, or some other number.”
