Democrats subpoenaed Mnuchin over Trump tax returns

Steve Mnuchin, Treasury Secretary, has rejected a request to hand President Trump’s tax returns over to Democrats. Richard Neal, the Democratic Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, in his turn, has issued subpoenas to Mnuchin and IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig.

According to the subpoena, “The IRS is under a mandatory obligation to provide the information requested,” and “The IRS has had more than four weeks to comply with the committee’s straightforward request. Therefore, please see the enclosed subpoena.”

Many praised Neal for that action, including Sean Eldridge, Stand Up America president, who stated that

“the American people deserve the truth about Trump’s deeply concerning conflicts of interest and his profiting from the presidency—and Congress is one step closer to delivering those answers.”

He added that “Compliance is not optional. If Secretary Mnuchin fails to comply with these subpoenas, Chairman Neal has no option but to hold him in contempt of Congress and take them to court.”

President Trump said he would fight all the subpoenas issued by Democrats. Earlier, Attorney General William was subpoenaed, but refused to comply, therefore, House Judiciary Committee voted to hold him in contempt.
Progressives have advised Democrats to start sending White House officials, who refuse to comply, to jail. Thor Benson, writer and a journalist, said “If Mnuchin doesn’t comply, throw him to jail.”
