A child who was not identified was detained on may 13 while illegally crossing the border near Hidalgo, Texas. The boy was placed in a border patrol station intended for accommodation in a shelter for migrants. On Monday, during check, it was found lifeless, officials reported. The cause of death is unknown and the case is pending.
In early April, the government unit responsible for unaccompanied migrant children, the Office for refugee resettlement (OPP), stated that it had encountered the largest number of detained children in history. Meanwhile, last month, according to the border authorities, almost 100,000 families crossed.
In his speech in El Paso in March, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan said that the border was at a turning point.
